The country of New Zealand is made up of two major islands, referred to as the North Island and the South Island respectfully, and numerous other smaller islands. New Zealand is famous for its isolation as it is 1250 miles or 2000 kilometers southeast of Australia. However, don't let the isolation fool you as New Zealand is a very modern and cosmopolitan country.
From the farthest point north on the North Island, to the far southeast of the South Island, you will find twenty seven, challenging major championship courses. You will be in awe of not only the challenge of the courses, but the awesome beauty of the background settings they reside in. These clubs can be found surrounded by snow capped mountains, which exceed ten thousand feet in height, incredible ocean views with the course edge dropping off the cliff into the ocean or smack dab in the middle of an active geothermal area.

The oldest of these courses, the Otago Golf Club, chartered in 1871, is located in the far southeast of the South Island in the province of Dunedin. Even though this course is more than 131 years old it is still a favorite club for New Zealanders and visitors alike. The course is well known for breaking the heart of many a professional and amateur golfer, on it's world renown hole "The Glen", by ruining a great golf score.
Golf NZ (New Zealand) style can be extremely formidable up in the northern most part of the North Island. Three great courses will be found in the Bay of Islands. One in particular is extremely challenging, as 15 holes of the Kauri Cliffs club, are bordered by the Pacific Ocean. The layout of this club was done by David Harman and Golfweek's David Seanor has rated the Kauri Cliffs in the top five of the world.
In addition to Kauri Cliffs you will also find the Carrington Golf Course in the far north reaches of the North Island. This unique course was layed out by Matt Dye from America. Mr. Dye chose to lay out the course so it could be played like an inland course, even though it's bordered by the Pacific Ocean. You will find yourself playing a course which is complete with vales and natural terrain water hazards, on gentle slopes of the lower side of the course which softly drop into the Great Pacific.
Last but not least of the three clubs in the north is the beautiful Keirkeri Golf Club. This club set’s in New Zealand's citrus capital and is bounded by stunning indigenous shrubbery and trees. You will be fascinated at the remarkable number of bird species that call these bushes and trees their home.
